PM Modi Inaugurates Maruti Suzuki’s EV and Battery Manufacturing Hub in Ahmedabad
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Maruti Suzuki’s electric car and battery manufacturing plant in Hansalpur, Ahmedabad, marking a major milestone in India’s clean mobility journey. The facility will produce hybrid battery electrodes, strengthening India’s domestic battery ecosystem, while also rolling out Maruti Suzuki’s first global battery electric vehicle (BEV) – the e VITARA.
The e VITARA, unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, will be exported to over 100 countries, including Japan and Europe, positioning India as a global EV manufacturing hub. PM Modi emphasized that this moment reflects the ‘Make in India’ vision, stating that the world will soon drive EVs proudly carrying the ‘Made in India’ tag.
The hybrid battery electrode production will be carried out by the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant, a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki. With this, more than 80% of battery value will now be manufactured locally, significantly boosting India’s push for self-reliance in EV supply chains.
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest automaker with a production capacity of 2.6 million vehicles annually, exported over 3.32 lakh cars and sold 19.01 lakh units domestically in FY25. The commercial production of the e VITARA officially begins today at the Hansalpur facility.
